Dansville- Ronald James "Jocko" Snyder age 84 of Dansville succumbed to a chronic condition on Friday November 4, 2016, while receiving loving comfort and care from his family and the staff at the Vincent House in Wayland.
He was born in Dansville on January 19, 1932, a son of the late Earl and Glenna Gunther Snyder. He was also predeceased by his former spouse Shirley Snyder.
Ron was a life resident of Dansville area except for his military time and a year in California. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic School and Dansville High School. He loved sports and was a member of the swim, track and field and football teams during his years at Dansville High. He was a US Air Force veteran during the Korean Conflict and he held the rank of Staff Sergeant at Scott Air Force base in St. Louis. He would jokingly refer to this as the "Western Front". Following his discharge from the Air Force he returned to Dansville and attended Geneseo State Teacher's College where he earned his bachelor's and eventually a master's degree. He was an elementary school teacher and assistant principal in the Rochester City School District, commuting from Dansville for over 25 years. He served as Town of North Dansville Justice and Village of Dansville Justice for many years, resigning in 2012. He volunteered and held leadership roles in several local organizations including the Dansville Lion's Club, where he was active with the Annual Lions Minstrel Show as Mr. Interlocutor, a social member of the Union Hose Fire Company of the Dansville Fire Dept., and the Daniel Goho Post # 87 of the American Legion. He was an avid card player, and liked to play Pitch with his friends at the Dansville Fish and Game Club and the Monday night card club. He was a faithful communicant of the Holy Family Catholic Community at St. Mary's Church in Dansville.
Jocko is survived by his wife Joyce of 44 years, Joy Snyder, sons, Rick Snyder of Dansville and Steve (Deb) Snyder of Orchard Park; a sister, Diane Snyder Leyden, grandchildren, Jason (Jennifer) Snyder and Sarah Snyder, great-grandsons Easton and Caleb Snyder, and a nephew, John Leyden. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all.
A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Ron at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 8 at 11:00 am. Interment with Full Military Honors will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Dansville. Ref., Hindle Funeral Home, Inc. 271 Main St., Dansville. Online remembrances may be left at HindleFuneralHome.com.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Vincent House, 310 Second Ave. Wayland, NY 14572.
