Obituary of Richard A. Rider

Dansville- Richard A Rider, 73, of Dansville, NY, passed away at home following a lengthy illness on September 10, 2023. Richard (aka Dick and Rich) was born on May 3, 1950, in Buffalo, NY. He was a vibrant and energetic person who lived life to the fullest. He was caring, thoughtful, and always willing to help no matter what was asked of him. Richard had a passion for classic cars and riding Harleys and found joy in the freedom of the open road and the camaraderie of fellow riders. He was an active member of Conesus Lake Riders where he served as President for many years. Dick developed the idea of having the motorcycle club raffle off a motorcycle each year as a part of their fundraising efforts in support of Camp Good Days and Special Times, Teresa House and other local charitable causes. He believed in making a difference in the lives of others and dedicated much of his time and resources to that in so many ways. When his sons were young, Dick, who was a proud Eagle Scout himself, became a Boy Scout leader for many years, leading his scouts on many camping trips and other adventures. Dick was a life member of the Union Hose and devoted many active years to that organization, responding to fires and also running on the Union Hose Motorized Competition drill team after he and his team members built the competition truck. Later, he became involved in the Dansville Ambulance Corp. and became a volunteer EMT. As with everything he took on, he was passionate about the work and also served in volunteer EMT capacity at Atofina, both as a trainer of other staff in first aid and emergency response and as a part of the emergency response team. His teaching talent was manifested again some years later when started an environmental inspecting career related to construction. In addition to environmental inspections for lead-based paint and asbestos, he taught classes on the subjects, helping contractors and others to recognize risk and address it safely. For many years after he retired, he still received calls from people asking him to teach classes. Richard's zest for life and adventurous spirit will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of kindness, generosity, and love will continue to inspire us. He had the ability to take on challenges of any kind and produce something wonderful, whether it was remodeling a home, planning an extended trip to far locations or a fund-raising event for good cause. When he got an idea, he did whatever it took to make the idea become reality. He always believed in achieving the possible and everything was possible to him. Richard will be deeply missed by Lee Ann, by his beloved wife of 52 years, his sons Kevin and Brian (Danielle), his sister Joanne Hyson, his brother Joe (Laura) Rider, his sister Sarah Wagner and his grandchildren Dustin, Ethan, Aidan, Cassidy, Micaiah, and Ayla Rider, Brendon Freeman and Abby Harrington and daughter by foreign exchange, Lillian Lordal Amnered. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends across the US. Please join us in Dick's Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 23rd at his home in Sparta starting at 2:00.
