Marsha, I heard about Adam's illness quite some time ago, but didn't realize he was your son. I am so sorry for your loss. Even though I didn't know him, I know many of his friends and they all speak so highly of him. You must be so proud of him. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Aunt Gail posted a condolence
Just some thoughts I wrote down at your funeral.
Your momma's baby-
this shouldn't be happening.
Too young, breaks my heart.
Such a little boy, yet somewhere along the way you turned into a young man. A fine upstanding young man, wanting nothing more than to serve your country. As I watch your military friends and family salute you, as you lay there lifelessly, I know it is the hardest thing they ever had to do. And as I watch your Father salute you, I know how proud he is of you, his baby boy.
He tries to keep the tears from streaming down his face, yet they still come as he says his goodbye.
We know you'll live on in our hearts. It isn't easy to say goodbye, but neither was your battle.
Rest in peace Adam Joseph, may you be in the presence of angels and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I had the honor of working and serving in iraq with Adam. He always put his job before himself. If it was staying late at the engine shop or working a 14 hour shift in the hot sun, he was the first to volunteer. One of the funniest moments I had with Adam is when we were shadow boxing outside a movie theatre in Anchorage after watching the latest "Rocky" movie and we didn't realize that people were watching us, once we noticed we both just started laughing. There is so much more that I want to say, but I just dont have the words. I miss you Adam and my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Adam where do I begin, from day one you have always been my sunshine even on the darkest days. Through the last 15 months you've showed all of us what determination, strength and positive thinking is all about. You never once gave up on your future plans, you always looked towards the future and never looked at your illness as a deterent. It is so hard for me to believe I'll never see your smiling face come through that front door ever again, but I have to believe I will see you once again in the future up above the stars. Until that time, know not a day will go by that I won't miss you or love you, remember you are my sunshine.

Adam you have taught me so much over your short time with us. One of the biggest was your strength and never giving up, you were always planning your future and never gave up hope that you would get better. It took a very special person to show the courage and strength that you showed us all. You will always be the ROCK that I can talk to as things start getting tougher because you have seen the worst. I will always cherish our private conversations we had toward the end and I will keep the promises I made to you. I miss and love you Uncle Lynn

I read about Adam Backus in the Democrat and Chronicle. I wanted to share an encouraging scripture with you and you family. Revelation 21:4 says "He (God) will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." I hope you find comfort in the promise.

I remember going through tech school with him at sheppard afb from august of 02 until december of 02 to become jet engine mechanics. He was a cool person that I was happy to know. I just found out today about his passing through a mutual friend of ours. I would like to offer my condolenses from one veteran to the family of another. After we graduated Tech School, the last thing I could have ever expected was to see him here at D-M AFB his first duty station and my only duty station. As someone I worked hand-in-hand with on a daily basis with as co-workers at the 355 cms engines backshop accessories section, we definetely helped eachother out and got things done. I know that this is a difficult time for all of the family and friends up at the Backus residence but know this, it was most definitely shocking news to hear and those of us knew him and worked with him do miss him. My thoughts are with all of your family and friends in this time of mourning. Oh and Adam keep doing up there what you loved doing here.

Adam was one of those people that ALWAYS had a smile on his face especially Mondays after the weekend football games. He will be greatly missed. It was a pleasure to work along side such an upbeat person as Adam. The night at chillies a few months back during his short visit seems like yesterday but he looked good and hid the pain so well. I was glad to be a part of Adams life as he has given everyone who knew him inspiritation to move on when times get tough.

I was very sorry to hear of his passing. I remember Adam for him being in the same scout troup, wrestling and trip to see Phantom of the Opera in Canada as my son, Andy. He was so easy to talk to. Andy also has fought cancer but won his battle. We both wish the same could have happened for Adam. Just thinking of him makes me smile as I type this. The Phantom trip was such fun since he was in the group that I was in charge of. What a shining light he was even then in high school.

Marsha, Mike, and Family, Thank you for raising Adam the way you did. I am completely honored to say that he was my best friend. He has touched the heart of a lot of people. His willingness to never say never and to always fight against the odds is inspiring. I know when people look back on his life there will be nothing negative that would come to their mind cause Adam never knew how to think or do anything negative. So I thank you for everything.
Adam, I will never forget the times we had sitting around talking for hours about how good the Red Sox are going to do or how awesome Matt Hughes is. The times I would make fun of how bad the Bills were and you would just sit there and say, "Watch and see!!!" The day that I went to the mailbox and got an unexpected package from you with Red Sox shirts for my little girls. I love you brother and you will always be remembered. Until we meet again GO BILLS!!!!!!
