Chet has the urge to hunt again, but his prey has changed to pictures on the wall, squirrels in the court yard, television and of course the nurses.

Oh Chet! As I sit here writing this, I keep thinking back to the time Brandi came home one night and was so upset. She was coming down Main Street and she got behind this slow moving car when she noticed a woman was just about in the lap of the driver. She came in the house so upset, we asked her what was wrong and she said, “I just saw grandma on the lap of some guy driving so slow down Main Street”. The truth be known, I think she was running late and knew she would get grounded if she was late getting home as we always had a time the girls needed to be home and it was these old farts fault she was running late, not the fact she was cutting it close to getting home.
Guess what Chet? It was you. We were all taken back by this as my dad had just passed shortly before. I could not believe my mom was dating already. How does this guy dare take my mother away from me? Who does he think he is, thinking he could take the place of my father? And so on. But deep inside I knew it wouldn’t be long for guys to be seeking her as she was a beautiful woman and still a very attractive woman.
Now, as I think about this. I am so happy you sought her out as I could not have thought of a better man for my mom to have in her life at this time. I was watching my mother fall in love to a wonderful man. This is something many of us will never experience in our lives. You see, our parents are bonded and in love long before they have their kids, especially back then.
I saw my mother’s eyes glow with love! I saw your eyes glow with wanting to care for her and to be her companion for the rest of both of your lives. I was jealous; I was somewhat hurt as someone was taking my mother away from me. At the same time I was also happy for her.
Then came the news of a marriage, are you kidding me? Nope and guess what? We are getting married November 23, right in the middle of deer season as I lived for this time of year. Not only were you taking my mother away from me, you are doing this during hunting season and I would miss a day of hunting or maybe two days as I had to look good for my mom (she made this clear to me). This meant haircut, shaving, showering with normal soap, putting on deodorant and cologne, a taboo during hunting season.
Bottom line Chet, you have been one of the greatest things that have walked into my life and my family’s lives. You welcomed us with open arms. You treated us as one of your own. You made us laugh many times over and over while sitting at the table playing cards, dominoes, and of course hand-in-foot (a card game Rae-Dene and I taught the both of you), something we will deeply miss when visiting mom.
The kids loved to call you PAPA CHETTY, the great-grandkids glowed when they heard PAPA CHETTY and GRAMMA KNAPP were on the phone, or they were coming home or sending them a card. Not to mention as one of the girls said, “But Dad, between the two of them they have a car for every day of the week!” As many of you know, Brandi and Beth were just starting or about to start driving.
Rae-Dene and I felt truly blessed to be able to visit with you this past Christmas. I know we all wish it could have been under different circumstances but none the less we enjoyed the time spent with you and mom. When you opened the plastic gun that was in your stocking (of course Rae-Dene got it for you) you began to shoot it at the picture on the wall, the picture of this tells the story. Chet has got the urge to hunt again, but this time the prey would be pictures on the wall, squirrels in the court yard, the television and of course the nurses.
Chet, I thank you for allowing me to experience my mom falling in love, being the happy go lucky guy you were, a man with a heart of gold and just being who you were and what you stood for. You told Rae-Dene and I while on our last visit that you were ready to go home whenever God would have you and your job on earth was completed. You have touched so many hearts in more ways than many will ever know. You will be deeply missed and the lessons you passed on will never be forgotten. God is so lucky to have you now. We Love You, Rest in peace my friend.

I remember driving down Main Street behind this "old" car and complaining about how slow they were driving and commenting on how the lady was sitting in the middle instead of sitting in the passenger seat. As I followed I was yelling even more, then when the car turned into Gma's driveway as I pulled into mine I immediately asked who you were and what you were doing in MY grandma's driveway! When I heard you were courting with Gma, I was not happy! As I continued to spy on you around the house, I realized that grandma was happy again. Chet, you gave Grandma energy and treated her like she was the only person around! I am so glad that I gained another grandpa 19 years ago. You made me laugh, think about things in a different way and even when you didn't agree with someone else it is okay and just to let it go.
I will never forget how you never treated me any different and showed love for me immediately. My girls loved riding on your knee and listening to your nursery rhymes. You still make Dan laugh with these songs! I am very lucky that my girls were able to spend so much time with you as their "Great Papa Chetty". They will cherish all the memories and fun they had with you! We LOVE you Paa Chetty and hope that you enjoy having your tractors to ride. Thank you for loving Gma with all your heart and giving her the opportunity to travel. Miss you and love you dearly Papa Chetty

Dear Helen, I sorrow with you at Chet's passing, but rejoice over a long life well lived. The separation hurts terribly, but it does help to know that his spirit lives on and he must feel considerable joy in being rid of that body that had become so cumbersome with its mortal maladies. It must be at least 20 years since we last saw each other. I tend to remember Chet as my fun "kid cousin" about eight and a half years younger. Aunt Dorothy said "We named him Chester but called him Chet because he was so fast that, by the time we said Chester, it was too late and he was already in trouble." But a review of his adult life is proof that he overcame that "trouble tendency" of early childhood. Shalom and God Bless to you and the family. Sincerely, with love, Barbara
