Obituary of Virgil Clifton Penny

Dansville- Virgil Clifton Penny, age 88, passed away early Tuesday morning, April 23,2019, at Strong Memorial Hospital following an illness.

 

He was born in Marland, OK on December 19, 1930, a son of the late Frank and Claudia (Hardin) Penny. On March 17, 1983, he was married to Judith (Hanrahan) Penny who survives. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by a son Virgil Lee Penny, and several brothers and sisters.

 

He was one of 12 children born to Claudia and Frank Penny. Virgil spent his childhood in Oklahoma until he entered the US Air Force after graduating high school. He spent 4 years in the Air Force and then went to college at Oklahoma State University. After graduation he was a teacher in Oxford, NE. He started working for the USPS during this time and eventually became the Postmaster. He worked for the USPS for nearly 30 years. Virgil retired from the USPS in 1989. After retirement Virgil enjoyed playing golf, playing solitaire, gardening and fishing. He was able to travel to visit family and friends. Virgil had 5 children with his first wife, Evonne: Ginny, Cathy, David, Clifton-Michael and Virgil Lee.

 

In addition to his wife Penny, Virgil is survived by his children, Virginia (Robert) Ward, Kathy Penny, David Penny, Michael (Nancy) Penny, Larry (Nancy) Reed, Rebecca (Wesley) Deen, 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday April 26, at 10:00 am St. Pius Catholic Church 35 Maple Ave, Cohocton, NY 14826. Interment with full military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery Corning, NY. Arrangements by the Hindle Funeral Home Inc. 271 Main St. Dansville, NY.
