Obituary of Royal MacDonald

Sparta- Royal Red MacDonald, age 88 formerly of Sparta, passed away peacefully Saturday morning March 1, 2008, at McAuley Manor in Hornell, where he had been a resident for the past few years. He was born in Springwater, on February 3, 1920, a son of the late Wallace and Laura Thorpe MacDonald Gilbert. Red was the longtime companion of Norma Jesmer of Dansville. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Arlo and Wing MacDonald and Carl Gilbert. Red was a school bus driver for the Dansville Central School for over thirty years, retiring in 1985. In his retirement years he worked for Expressway Auto Auction. Red and his brother Paul owned and operated MacDonalds Garage in Dansville in the forties. He was an active bowler, and bowled at the Hornell Bowl, Brae Burn in Dansville and traveled with friends all over New York State to participate in various bowling tournaments. Surviving in addition to his dear friend Norma, are a daughter, Jeraldine (Ted) Decker, of Canandaigua, a brother, Paul (Daphne) MacDonald of Dansville, granddaughters Karen (Angelo) Congilaro, Sharon (Randal) Decker Rohring, Marcy Mattox, Allison (James) Smith. Several great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 5 pm at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St., Dansville, where services will be held at 5:00 pm. Interment will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Springwater.
