Obituary of David H. Harter

He was born in East Springwater on November 20, 1933, a son of the late Merlin Duane and Alta Winona Potter Harter. On September 4, 1965, he was married to Patricia Ann Ess Harter who survives. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Bertha Pifer, Robin, William, and Keith Harter. Sister and brothers in-law Agnes Pifer Harter, Harmon Pifer and Wesley Eugene Pifer Sr.,
Dave was employed at Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation in Dansville for over twenty five years as a utility man and blacksmith. He was the Livingston County Fire Coordinator and Civil Defense Director from 1979 until his retirement in 1995. Dave was very active with the Jackson Hose Company # 2 and the Dansville Volunteer Fire Department. He served as Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief and Chief. He served on nearly all the committees including the Annual Jackson Hose Oktoberfest for over thirty years, the annual Dogwood Festival and Firemans Parade; he served on the Western New York Firemans convention committees. A member past president, and life member of the WNYVFA, a member of the Livingston County Firefighters Association, the Livingston County Fire Chiefs Association, the Firemans Association of the State of New York, the Dansville Fire Department Past Chiefs Association, Western NY Fire Coordinators Association, NYS Fire Coordinators and Investigators Association, United States Civil Defense Council, the National Coordinating Council on Emergency Management. He was a charter member of the Dansville Ambulance Company. Dave was a US Army Veteran, serving from 1954 to 1957. He was a member of the Daniel Goho Post # 87 of The American Legion, and a member of the Frank J. Casbolt # 6780 of the VFW. He was a member of the Livingston County Historical Society, a member of the Twenty-five year club at Foster Wheeler, a former of the Loyal Order of the Moose # 1130 of Dansville, the Beards Creek Golf Club in Liecester. In his retirement he enjoyed golfing and keeping the maintenance up on his lawn and home.
Surviving in addition to his wife dear wife Pat, are his children, Kathy (Bill Bennett) Harter of Dansville, Marlene (Gary Yenei) McDowell of Sodus, and their mother Barb Bradley Kreiley, Diane (Brian) Walsh of Syracuse, and Darrin Harter of Sparta. Four grandchildren, Brandy McDowell Parham, Skyler Cuozzo, Austin Harter, and Dylan MacIntyre and a great-grandson, Dominick McDowell, two sisters Sylvia Pifer of Wayland and Edie Stout of Poughkeepsie, five brothers, Leonard (Anna) Harter of FL, Bruce Harter of CA, Ertram Sam (Jean) Harter of FL, Fred (Vicki) and Frank Woodchuck (Kathleen)Harter both of Wayland, sisters in law Evelyn Harter of VA and Barbara Mignemi of Mt. Morris many nieces and nephews.
There will be no prior calling hours. A memorial service to celebrate Dave's life will be held Wednesday at 11:00am in the Dansville Fire Hall on Franklin St. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Loon Lake. Arrangements by the Hindle Funeral Home Inc. 271 Main St., Dansville.
