"Take care of those kiddos. They are so so cute." Part of the last conversation I had with my mother. Elizabeth and Luke, her great grandchildren. I promised I would make sure they know what a wonderful mother and grandmother she was.

Becoming My Mother
I'm not sure where I first heard that daughters eventually become their mothers. As the ever defiant middle child, I was determined this was not going to happen to me.
One day when I was maybe in my early thirties, I was going up an escalator in a department store when I saw a cute outfit. I went to look at it and it was an Alfred Dunner brand!! This was the brand of clothing my mother would buy. I immediately called my sister and said "It's happening. I'm turning into mom!" As time went on, I found myself saying things like "Don't count your chickens before they are hatched" and "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". I found myself doing more things around the house because that's the way my mother did it. (I still can't fold a bottom sheet like she could.)
While the transformation is not totally complete, I can honestly say I'm proud to be on my way. She was the best mom anyone could ask for.

We always looked forward to seeing Aunt Carolyn during the summer on our trips to New York. She always made time to see our family, even when it was tough for her to get out and do so. She was a wonderful person, always quick to engage in conversation and make you feel at home. We will miss her smile and our talks on the porch. We are blessed to have known her. - Alan, Jessica, Sophia, Alexander, and Mathias Matkovic

I am Jim Wehling, Carolyn's brother. Carolyn lived a life of service to others. For me, that is not surprising. Our parents were optimists. What is my evidence? They decided to have children and raise a family toward the end of the great depression and had me during WWII. They also had a strong sense of community and service to others. They instilled in us this sense of service to make the community a better place. Carolyn became a nurse, but even after that career served as a hospice volunteer and volunteered at the hospital. Of course she had other roles as well as a mother, sister, aunt, grand mother, wife, and dedicated servant to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Danville. Her faith was strong and the Bible was a source of inspiration for her. Both the Old and New Testament have numerous references to loving and serving others. Galations 5, versus 13 and 14 summarizes these references: "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law his fulfilled in keeping this one command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself'." Carolyn lived this life.

Carolyn was my “Big Sister.” Since my mother was the oldest of eight, she was the first one in the family to have children. So, Carolyn and I were doted on at weekly chicken dinners where the family gathered. It was a wonderful bonding time and we loved it.
As time passed, Carolyn and I experienced many adventures together playing outside and inside with cousins and neighbors. She was the cautious, sensible one in our two-some. I was the more adventurous one and sometimes took risks. Quite often when that occurred, Carolyn gave directions to save me from minor catastrophes.
Although, it might be fairly uncommon in these times, I remember a trip to a cherry orchard to pick sweet cherries. I discovered the sweetest and biggest cherries were on the high branches. So, dispite an admonishment from our parents NOT to climb trees I tried. Climbing the tree was easy until I got my foot stuck in between the branch and trunk of the tree. Carolyn was on the ground looking up at me, urgently telling me “to get down” before Mom saw us. She felt responsible for me. Since I couldn’t budge my foot, Carolyn suggested that I take my shoe off. That suggestion solved the problem. I pulled out my empty shoe, put it on and climbed down from the tree before we were discovered. So you see, she was often my guide and role model.
As we grew and matured, I understood more and more what having a “Big Sister” meant. I will miss her guidance and love.
May Carolyn rest in peace.
