Obituary of Burton J. Brokaw

Ossian- Burton J. Brokaw age 71, of Ossian, passed away Tuesday afternoon September 15, 2009, at home following a long illness.He was born in Ossian, NY on June 12, 1938, a son of the late Lester and Sarah Thomas Brokaw. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Bruce Brokaw, Bernard Brokaw, Beulah Popple and Bethel LaBell, a brother in law Wayne LaBell and a grandson Blake Brokaw. On July 18, 1959, he was married to Crystal Ness Brokaw who survives.Burton was a truck driver for Shay's Service of Dansville for thirty one years. Active in the Ossian Community he was a charter member and Past Chief of the former Ossian Center Fire Dept. He worked for the Town of Ossian Highway Department for ten years, served as Town Justice for several terms. He had also worked at the Livingston County Sheriff's Department for nearly two decades as a special services and road patrol Deputy Sheriff, and drove tour bus for Covered Wagon in Hornell. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local # 529. He enjoyed being with people, he had a strong sense of family and was affectionately known as the Greatest Grandfather.Surviving in addition to his dear wife of fifty years Crystal, are his children and their spouses, Douglas (Debbie) Brokaw of Adrian, Daniel (Julie) Brokaw of Avon, Darlene (Chris) Baird of Wayland, Dean (Christina) Brokaw of Arkport and Donna (Todd) Haraty of Ossian. A sister Beverly Mahony of Painted Post and a sister in-law Carmen Brokaw of Dansville. Twelve grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.Friends may call Friday from 4:00 -8:00 pm at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St., Dansville. Services will be held Saturday at 11:00am at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Dansville. Interment will be in the Canaseraga Cemetery, Canaseraga.
